Temperament
The Study
One of four Swiss Sennenhund breeds, the Bernese drove cattle to pasture and pulled milk carts through alpine villages. Its striking tricolour coat and calm, steady gaze reflect a dog built for patient, deliberate work. Berners are devoted to their families and famously soft with children, though they can be reserved with strangers. They mature slowly and, sadly, carry one of the shorter lifespans among large breeds — every year with a Berner is one to treasure.
Care & Keeping
Moderate daily exercise suits them; they dislike heat and thrive in cool climates. Heavy seasonal shedding calls for frequent brushing. Joint-friendly exercise is important during their long growth period.
